Het Zweedse schrijversechtpaar Sjöwall & Wahlöö heeft met zijn politieromans over inspecteur Martin Beck uit Stockholm een groot internationaal lezerspubliek weten te veroveren. De boeken verschenen tussen 1965 en 1975. In 1965 kwam de eerste roman uit, De vrouw in het Gotakanaal en tien jaar later werd de reeks voltooid met De terroristen. De boeken zijn allemaal verfilmd en zijn ook in deze tijd nog steeds verrassend actueel.

Het Zweedse schrijversechtpaar Maj Sjöwall und Per Wahlöö wordt gezien als de grondleggers van de Scandinavische, maatschappij-kritische misdaadroman. Vanaf het begin was duidelijk dat er tien boeken zouden verschijnen. Ze wilden met hun tien romans de toenmalige misstanden in de Zweedse samenleving aan de kaak stellen.

Three months later, all Beck knows is that her name was Roseanna and that she could have been strangled by any one of eighty-five people on a cruise. As the melancholic Beck narrows the list of suspects, he is drawn increasingly to the enigma of the victim, a free-spirited traveler with a penchant for casual sex, and to the psychopathology of a murderer with a distinctive--indeed, terrifying--sense of propriety.

    A vessel dredging the busy Göta canal scoops up the mud-covered, naked body of a young woman. It takes agonizing months to identify her and more months of painstaking research to arrest her killer. The book is situated in Sweden, the victim a US citizen.
    This timeless 1964 police procedural by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö (S&W) is a true classic and a feast to reread. It is the first of a series of 10 novels completed in 1976 with Martin Beck (MB) as chief detective. He explains his key rules for crime investigation and presents himself as a non-assertive head of a family of four, who eats and sleeps badly and smokes a lot. He hates crowds, driving (in) cars, flying, taking the subway. But he is quite systematic and sharp when murder is at stake.
    S&W were inspired by Georges Simenon and Ed McBain, wildly popular writers in Europe in the 1960-1980s about murder squads opening up a bit about their private lives. All 10 S&W's books are police procedurals, alert to tunnel vision, methodical, casting the net wide, relying on pre-DNA forensic medicine. The books can be read separately.
    What was new about the series? It began in book 3, questioning the role of the police in a democracy, with its army roots and poor role during WW II, its violence against protesters and its patrol car cops having an average IQ of 93. In later books this theme takes up ever more space. To leftist readers in the 1970s, S&W pictured and confirmed a dismal functioning of the welfare state. S&W created the Scandinavian school of crime writing in which the police do not solve deep social problems, but often exacerbate them...
    "Roseanne" is a gem and a great introduction to S&W's universe.
