Minutes into the book, this reader was hooked because of the masterful writing. It is about a polio outbreak in the US during WW II, 11 years before a vaccine was found. It deeply unsettles a Jewish neighbourhood in Newark, NJ, which worries on two fronts. All able-bodied young males have left to fight the Japanese and Germans. But in the hot summer of 1944 some of their younger children die within 3 days from this mystery disease or are condemned to live forever with withered limbs and leg braces. Families already worrying about their soldier sons busily discuss how polio is threatening their younger children. They are close to mass hysteria: countless suspicions and accusations are whispered in every direction...

Mr. Roth's memories of wartime Newark, its smells and sounds, are vibrant and graphic. He has also read a lot to reconstruct this forgotten epoch in American medical history.

"Nemesis" has 3 parts and is about orphan Eugene "Bucky" Cantor (23), a short, muscular, agile sports instructor raised by his grandparents. The armed forces turned him down because of his poor eye sight. He acts commendably during the summer of 1944, but leaves Newark at the height of the outbreak to pursue an alternative life choice. This is the subject of Part 2.
What terrible drama follows is for readers to discover. The fictional author is not Mr. Roth or his creation Bucky Cantor, but a polio casualty mentioned briefly on p.108, Arnie Mesnikoff, who reappears in Part 3, "Reunion".
Its final pages depict Bucky preparing, witnessed by a crowd of children, for an unforgettable series of ever further javelin throws. It inspired young Arnie, 12 at the time, to write this story. Perfect book for discussion groups because of the guilt, the love, and the struggle to interpret what God had in mind to create and unleash polio so harshly on innocent children.

Ik vond het een geweldig boek. Op sommige momenten wel een beetje langdradig. Het boek gaat over polio en dat vond ik erg interessant. Polio was niet het enige wat centraal stond, ook liefde, schuldgevoel en trots stond centraal. Hierdoor werd het boek niet te eendradig. Ik raad het boek zeker aan!

Dit boek beschrijft het leven van een man die wordt geconfronteerd met schuld. Schuld omdat hij denkt dat hij verantwoordelijk is voor het overlijden van zijn studenten. In zijn omgeving gaan een aantal jongens die hij lesgeeft dood aan polio. Het verhaal is goed opgebouwd en ook informatief. Het is vooral een meeslepend verhaal dat je kan ontroeren. Zelf vond ik het einde niet zo sterk.

Wat op het eerste gezicht een eenvoudig verhaal lijkt dat zich afspeelt tijdens een polio-epidemie in de VS blijkt in deel 3 vooral een zoektocht naar de betekenis van een grote tragedie in het persoonlijke leven.
Philip Roth bewijst maar weer eens dat hij niet alleen een superieure schrijver is, maar ook een briljant denker. Annelies leijdeckers
