ik ben al jaren fan van michael connelly, maar zijn harry bosch boeken vind ik nog altijd de beste. en deze is weer onvervalst 'unputdownable'. het verhaal begint met een redelijk simpel politie onderzoek naar de moord op een chinese winkelier, maar al snel raak je in chinese bendes, achterdocht over lekken van informatie en bosch' persoonlijke leven verzeild ( ik wil de plot niet verklappen, al kun je dit deel raden als je de achterflap leest). wat connellys boeken ook zo goed maakt, naast de spanning en het tempo, is dat hij plotwendingen weet te verzinnen, waarbij iets heel onbenulligs tot enorme gevolgen leidt. zoals dat volgens mij in het echte leven ook gebeurt.
het boek is ruim 400 bladzijden dik, maar ik heb het in een paar uur verslonden!- en dan baal je dat je het uit hebt, wat voor mij het enige minpunt is. aanrader van de bovenste plank dus!

This book received rave reviews upon publication and this reviewer agrees with all the praise. It is to some degree about children. Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch (HB)’s partner Ignacio Ferras has a toddler, new-born twins and a loudly-complaining wife. He was also hurt badly before the twins were born and shows reluctance to do street work, esp. if overtime goes unpaid. Harry himself learned some six years ago that he is the father of a girl of 13. The mother is an ex-FBI officer he worked with on a case, and who has since made a career as a professional card player, first in Las Vegas, then in Hong Kong.
A robbery case in LA develops into a policeman’s nightmare: your own family becomes involved. MC’s books about Harry Bosch revolve around a number of constants: (1) HB answers the cries for justice from victims of homicide: (2) he always faces corruption, betrayal, double dealing from within the LAPD, but believes no force can hurt him, slow him down. In “Nine Dragons” he realizes his daughter living with her mother in Hong Kong is his Achilles heel, and will remain so forever. ..
Superbly plotted with some unexpected twists at the end, the book manages to capture the atmosphere of the Chinese community in LA and life in Hong Kong. Typically, MC’s books do not drag on for months but are fierce outbursts of activity lasting three or four days by a detective who is aware of the latest techniques in ballistics, fingerprint detection and the possibilities of smart phones. One critic wrote that MC and HB get better and better. This reviewer agrees.

Heel spannend met onverwachte plotwendingen. Het is wel beter om eerst de andere Harry Bosch verhalen te lezen. Dan snap je de karakters beter.
