In John le Carré's electrifying novel Our Kind of Traitor, innocents abroad are drawn into the darkest recesses of the financial world.

Britain is in the depths of recession. A left-leaning young Oxford academic and his barrister girlfriend take an off-peak holiday on the Caribbean island of Antigua. By seeming chance they bump into a Russian millionaire called Dima who owns a peninsula and a diamond-encrusted gold watch. He also has a tattoo on his right thumb, and wants a game of tennis.

What else he wants propels the young lovers on a tortuous journey through Paris to a safe house in the Swiss Alps, to the murkiest cloisters of the City of London and its unholy alliance with Britain's Intelligence Establishment.

'If you want to know about the state of Britain today, forget the Booker shortlist. Just read John le Carré's latest thriller' Evening Standard

'Few recent plays have had dialogue as good, and few recent literary novels can boast a set of characters so vividly imagined. Our Kind of Traitor is a teasing, beguiling, masterly performance' Sunday Times

John le Carré was born in 1931 and attended the universities of Bern and Oxford. He taught at Eton and served briefly in British Intelligence during the Cold War. For the last fifty years he has lived by his pen. His most recent novel, A Delicate Truth, is also published by Penguin. He divides his time between London and Cornwall.

JLC’s 22nd novel is about love, honour and betrayal. OKT is an indictment of Britain’s ruling strata and of the Kremlin’s campaign to control Russian organized crime as they subdued the oligarchs a decade earlier: Share with us, or else! The oligarchs complied, fled abroad or were jailed. Dealing with Russia’s crime syndicates is harder. They are ancient brotherhoods of “honourable criminals” (“vory”) living by strict codes whereby talking to, let alone dealing with the State is a punishable by death. But now Russia’s 7 richest and best-organized crime syndicates are anxious to make a final deal with the Kremlin. There is one obstacle.
It is Dima, a “vor” since the age of 14, who spent 15 icecold years in Kolyma and then became the world’s best money launderer on behalf of himself and the Seven Brotherhoods. Now he is doomed because he knows too much and refuses to sell out, deal with the State. He is a blunt, forceful, emotional, true Russian with only days or weeks to live once he has signed over his private business empire to the Seven Brotherhoods.
On the run in Antigua, Dima makes a last-ditch effort to save at least his family by challenging young Perry Makepiece to a game of tennis. PM and his lawyer girlfriend Gail fall prey to the charms of Dima and his mournful extended family. He pens down what Dima tells him about his life and works. Perry’s 28-page account reaches British intelligence. Which reacts promptly, but not as one piece. In near-total secrecy, a small team of believers in Dima debriefs Perry and Gail, initiates them in spy craft and plans an operation to bring Dima and his family to the UK from Switzerland…
Characters and dialogues are great and the moral implications of this tale go beyond anything JLC has written before. It is a very rich and deep book. True masterpiece.
