AN AURELIO ZEN MYSTERY

Police Commissioner Aurelio Zen has crossed swords with the establishment before - and lost. But from the depths of a mundane desk job in Rome he is unexpectedly transferred to Perugia to take over an explosive kidnapping case involving one of Italy's most powerful families.

But nobody much wants Zen to succeed: not the local authorities, who view him as an interloper, and certainly not Miletti's children, who seem content to let the head of the family languish in the hands of his abductors - if he's still alive.

  • Brilliant tutorial about kidnapping

Rereading this book after many years was a real feast. It was MD’s breakthrough and earned him a coveted award too. He has made excellent use of his teaching years in Italy to create an enthralling series of police procedurals and this is the first. MD’s hero is Aurelio Zen, a native of Venice but really hailing from Fiume, now Rijeka, Croatia and was once specialized in kidnapping & ransom cases. Early on, Zen is portrayed as scapegoat for police incompetence re Aldo Moro, an Italian top politician kidnapped by left wing radicals, eventually found dead in a car booth in 1978 [and as a divorced man with a US lady friend, living in a cramped flat in Rome with his old mother and her life-long cook and caretaker]. Since the Aldo Moro fiasco, Zen has been put on ice, inspecting in a vague, non-investigative capacity and from Rome, Italy’s provincial police forces.
MD’s deep understanding of moods and facts in (pre-)1980s Italy is truly awesome and deftly woven into the plot. Here, Zen is once more forced to investigate a kidnapping with a ransom paid, another demanded. The victim is a prominent industrialist from Perugia, a town he is not familiar with. Throughout, fierce stereotyping about culture and dialect intersect with Italy’s North-South divide and add weight to what the title is about. MD shows how in the 1980s Italy’s legislature, judiciary and executive were not only linked but also intertwined with the Mafia and other pressure groups…
Thanks to his frequent inspections of often hostile provincial police forces, Zen has become a diplomat keenly aware of body language, false rhetoric and possible intrigue. Given the challenges he faces from the immediate family of the kidnap victim and other stakeholders, success is unlikely. Bringing this kidnapping to a satisfactory conclusion will not revive his stalled career, not in Italy of the Rat King. Great background and attention to detail. Brilliantly plotted and beautifully written.
