"Hugh Howey spent eight years living on boats and working as a yacht captain for the rich and famous. It wasn't until the love of his life carried him away from these vagabond ways that he began to pursue literary adventures, rather than literal ones.

    Five stars - a must read, but only after you read Wool (another of my five star faves).

    Although Shift is a prequel, it answers many of the mysteries from Wool. Reading it first would steal Wool's suspense. Besides answering the big mysteries, the author also includes little clues and details in the two books that provoke "ah-hah" moments. While you are at it, go ahead and buy Dust - the sequel continuing where Wool leaves off, don't skip this book though, even if its a prequel, it answers plenty of questions that need answering before reading Dust.

    Without a doubt, the story is apocalyptic and somewhat depressing, yet I could not turn my attention away. I feel similarly when watching House of Cards - evil people getting away with murder, while I watch in horrified fascination. I don't necessarily buy the science in Shift, but I could easily suspend my disbelief for the sake of the story.

    The writing is engaging and fast reading. Despite the length, I finished it in less than two days. As in Wool, the characters are extremely well developed and engaging, whether good or evil. All ring true, including the minor characters. In fact, the entire series is disturbingly real in its predictions of human behavior and interactions when placed in this setting.

    I want everyone to read this series. We need the reminder that our current civilization is extremely fragile and should not be taken for granted.

    geweldige trilogie...het is ook wel realistisch want zoiets zou in de toekomst best mogelijk zijn. Bizarre twist in de loop van het verhaal ook. Heel spannend en jammer dat het afgelopen was.
