is schrijver.Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of scientific thinking. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world.
Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamont died in an asylum in 1893. In the same year Doyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financial problems, Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has suspected in an article, that Doyle's mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a student of pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle. In de literatuur/lectuur zijn er iconen: Sherlock Holmes is er een van. Conan Doyle schiep zijn onsterfelijke detective op Baker street 221 B, met zijn goede vriend Watson en de mensen waren verkocht. Holmes is een voorbeeld geweest voor heel veel boeken-detectives na hem. En nog steeds is hij een geweldige inspiratiebron: Jeremy Brett was Sherlock, en nu is er ook zijn gemoderniseerde alter ego Sherlock van de BBC. In dit e-book zijn alle verhalen opgenomen: de series korte verhalen en de bekende lange. Wat willen we nu nog meer: de complete Sherlock Holmes op e-reader. Dit is genieten!!

Een prachtig boek!

Eigenlijk had ik net de Penguin clothbound classics van Sherlock Holmes gekocht, maar daar staat bijvoorbeeld The Hound of the Baskervilles niet in. In plaats van die er dan los bij te kopen, heb ik besloten dit schitterende boek aan te schaffen dat echt alles van Sherlock Holmes bevat. Dus niet alleen de 56 verhalen (in de Penguin staan er 23) maar ook de 4 romans, namelijk A Study in Scarlett, The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles en The Valley of Fear (in de Penguin staat geen enkele roman). Het is dus wel een lijvig boekwerk, maar erg mooi. De uitgave is goud-op-snee.

Incompleet

Deze versie van The complete collection of Sherlock Holmes is eigenlijk helemaal niet compleet. Het laatste deel, the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, hoort uit 12 hoofdstukken te bestaan, maar het zijn er slechts 2!
Verder zijn de verhalen van Sherlock Holmes natuurlijk echte klassiekers, waarbij je wel soms moet indenken in welke tijd dit is geschreven. Veel termen en opmerkingen kunnen echt niet meer in deze tijd (racistische slurs, ongemakkelijke beschrijvingen van dames).
