Peter F. Hamilton heeft een machtig boek geschreven. Een heelal met kolonies op verre planeten die ontgonnen worden door dwangarbeiders, smokkelaars met flair, een cultuur waarin de gezagvoerder telepatisch verbonden is met genetisch aangepaste levende ruimteschepen naast een cultuur die de techniek omarmt, de aarde waar de inwoners leven in grote arcologies, feodaal geregeerde planeten, geheime beschermheren, personages die het verdienen om gekend te worden, kortom cliche maar teveel om op te noemen.
Wat gebeurt er als er een scheur in de werkelijkheid ontstaat, waar blijven onze zielen als we dood gaan, hoe wreed zijn mensen, en hoe nobel.
De Nederlandse vertaling is een hakerig verhaal, in het Engels loopt het als de spreekwoordelijke trein. Koop gelijk deel 2 en 3.
