Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1940 to 1945 and from 1951 to 1955. A prolific writer, whose works include The Second World War and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. David Cannadine was born in Birmingham in 1950. He is the editor and author of many acclaimed books, including The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy, which won the Lionel Trilling Prize and the Governors' Award; Aspects of Aristocracy; G. M. Trevelyan; The Pleasures of the Past; History in Our Time and Class in Britain. He is General Editor of the Penguin History of Britain series.

After the 1881 rebellion of the Mahdi had plunged the Sudan into chaos, British attempts to withdraw from the region climaxed in General Gordon's ill-fated attempt to rescue officials, soldiers, and Egyptian subjects from Khartoum. A decade later, the British government began its efforts in the pacification and restoration of the Sudan--a mission that succeeded within two years, at the final battle of Omdurman.
Churchill was present at this decisive battle, and he wrote this book while he was still a young cavalry officer. In addition to the future statesman's views of the conflicts and the politics behind them, it shows how the River War altered the fates of England, Egypt, and the Arabian people of northeast Africa. Illustrated by 22 maps and plans, this treatise offers valuable insights into a historic clash of Western and Arabic cultures.

    De reden dat ik dit boek kocht was met name dat ik een boek wilde lezen dat Chrchill had geschreven voordat hij bekend werd als staatsman. Ik had echter niet verwacht dat ik het boek zelf ook goed zou vinden. Het boek is immers meer dan honderd jaar geleden geschreven, in het Engels, en vanuit een visie op de wereld die erg verschilt van de onze. Ik was dan ook verbaasd hoe goed ik het boek uiteindelijk vond. Het verhaal van het opstandige Soedan, dat in oorlog komt met Egypte (grotendeels onder het gezag van Groot Brittannië) is erg interessant. Churchill weet het verhaal ook gemakkelijk te vertellen waardoor het goed en leuk leest. je komt goed in het verhaal te zitten en wilt graag door lezen om te weten wat er verder gebeurd. Het is natuurlijk wel echt een verslag, en dus beschrijvend. Ook worden er zo nu en dan woorden en termen gebruikt die een man als ik, met gemiddelde kennis van Engels, niet ken. Al met al is het in mijn ogen een interessant boek en dan ook zeker een aanrader.
