Douglas Adams (1952-2001) creëerde alle elkaar tegensprekende verschijningsvormen van Het Transgalactisch Liftershandboek: radiohoorspelen, boeken, een televisieserie, een computerspel, toneelbewerkingen, een strip en een badhanddoek. In 2005 kwam zelfs een verfilming in de bioscopen. Hij werd geboren in Cambridge (Engeland) en woonde met zijn vrouw en dochter in Santa Barbara, Californië, waar hij op 11 mei 2001 onverwacht overleed.

For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be rather a lot to cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun. The Galaxy may offer a mind-boggling variety of ways to be blown up and/or insulted, but it’s very hard to get a cup of tea. Life, the Universe and Everything Following a number of stunning catastrophes, Arthur Dent is surprised to find himself living in a hideously miserable cave on prehistoric Earth. However, just as he thinks that things cannot get possibly worse, they suddenly do. An eddy in the space-time continuum lands him, Ford Prefect, and their flying sofa in the middle of the cricket ground at Lord's, just two days before the world is due to be destroyed by the Vogons. Escaping the end of the world for a second time, Arthur, Ford, and their old friend Slartibartfast embark (reluctantly) on a mission to save the whole galaxy from fanatical robots. Not bad for a man in his dressing gown. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish There is a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. It's not an easy thing to do, and Arthur Dent thinks he's the only human who's been able to master this nifty little trick - until he meets Fenchurch, the woman of his dreams. Fenchurch once realised how the world could be made a good and happy place. Unfortunately, she's forgotten. Convinced that the secret lies within God's Final Message to His Creation, they go in search of it. And, in a dramatic break with tradition, actually find it . . . Mostly Harmless Arthur Dent has settled down on the small planet Lamuella and has embraced his role as a Sandwich Maker. However, his plans for a quiet life are thrown awry by the unexpected arrival of his daughter. There's nothing worse than a frustrated teenager with a copy of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in their hands. When she runs away, Arthur goes after her determined to save her from the horrors of the universe. After all - he's encountered most of them before. This publishing phenomenon began as a radio drama and now exists in a number of wildly contradictory versions (including a TV series, a movie and a towel) - this version, produced by Douglas Adams' original publisher, is, at least, definitively inaccurate.

    Begrijp mij niet verkeerd. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy krijgt van mij 5 sterren.
    Echter niet in deze uitgave. De bladzijdes staan qua dikte en stevigheid gelijk aan vloeipapier.
    Wanneer je het boek vast houdt zakt deze om je hand heen.
    Ik was zelfs bang om een bladzijde om te slaan, constant het gevoel dat deze zo doormidden scheurde.

    Zelf heb ik dit artikel dan ook gelijk retour gestuurd en de "duurdere" collectie genomen met een papierdikte die wel normaal hanteert.

    Over inhoud van het boek ga ik het niet hebben. Afwerking van het boek is zeermooie druk. Let op. Omwille van het groot aantal pagina's (800) is het gedrukt op zeer dun papier, maar toch stevig genoeg. Tot nu toe slechts 1 drukfoutje tegengekomen. Afwerking met zilver op snee wat een extra uitstraling heeft

    One morning Arthur Dent wakes up with yellow bulldozers in front of his house which is to be demolished to make way for a highway bypass. He doesn’t know it yet, but this scene is about to be repeated on a much grander scale when a large yellow spaceship enters the Earth’s atmosphere.

    This omnibus contains all five main novels of ‘The Hitchhiker Trilogy’ written by Douglas Adams as well as the short story ‘Young Zaphod Plays It Safe’. These are the novelizations of what originally started as a BBC radio comedy also (mostly) written by Douglas Adams. The Hitchhiker series has been and still is vastly influential in every form of media and for that reason alone it is worth reading (also to understand why all your colleagues at the office keep answering ‘42’ to all your questions). It will not necessarily be suitable for everyone, though. For instance, the storyline remains somewhat underdeveloped as it is clearly secondary to the comedy. This may occasionally give the impression of lack of direction. One will have to accept that for many things in these books there simply is no point whatsoever in them happening … they just happen. Indeed it takes a particular sense of humor to appreciate the Hitchhiker series. Basically they consist of a continuous, unceasing barrage of silliness and weirdness. Often this is decidedly funny, but occasionally the jokes are not very subtle or even a bit bland and tiring. However, for people that are fond of the British, Monty Python-ish, absurd, deadpan kind of humor this Trilogy of Five that raises nonsense to an art form is without doubt a safe bet. Overall, ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ is one-of-a-kind, charming, very inventive and amusing.

    People that enjoyed this series may also like ‘Good Omens’ by Pratchett and Gaiman.

    Erg leuk boek, soms onnavolgbaar maar je wordt meegenomen naar alle uithoeken van het universum. Een bijzondere combinatie van humor, drama en intellect. Een boek dat je aan het denken zet en nieuwe invalshoeken geeft.
