I only read three Gothic novellas by Susan Hill before this book. It is (4/8) in a series starring Simon Serrailler (SS). He is a senior detective in the UK, single in his late 30s, and one of a set of triplets. His brother works in Australia, his sister Cat(herine) is a family doctor like her husband Chris, in SS's fictive hometown Lafferton. They are very close. There was once a fourth, handicapped child. The mother of the triplets and the sister have passed on, their reserved father Richard, now in his mid 70's, is a retired medical consultant with a much younger, loveable lady friend, a fact SS finds hard to swallow.

This thriller is about one or two gunmen, using a handgun or a rifle, to kill women who appear about to be married, or just married. But the profile is weak... It has several other story lines e.g. about how to care for terminal close ones or belief in or denial of God. A cast of characters struggles with such dilemmas and the emotions and denials they evoke. The book starts with the memory of a 12-year old boy, allowed in freezing weather to join his dad for the first time on a hunting trip. Every five, six chapters, there is an update about him, or not?

This is a police procedural, an ongoing family novel and a love story about 4 people who lost their partners prematurely. And about other people who never won over the partner they pined for... It is very English with lots of tea, toasted bread and Marmite, about living at the top of one's abilities with maturing children causing sometimes baffling problems. Rich and thrilling book with 15+ dead from various causes, despite Susan Hill's gaps and loose ends. Having read four of SH's books, I wonder why they always appear to have been rushed into print. A book women will love more than men.

De titel slaat op een korte periode in het turbulente leven van Jane, die in een klooster in- en uittrad en de ‘gelofte van zwijgen’ niet aankon. Ze duikt af en toe op in dit deel, waaruit een oudere band met de serieheld duidelijk wordt.
Las eerder 3 novelles van Susan Hill (SH). Deze serie heeft Simon Serrailler (SS) als held: hij is bijna 40, hoofdinspecteur van politie, ongehuwd en deel van een drieling: zijn broer werkt als arts in Australië, zijn zus Cat(herine) is huisarts net als haar man Chris, in SS’s fictieve woonplaats Lafferton. Er was ooit een vierde, gehandicapt zusje. De moeder van de drieling en het zusje is overleden, hun vader Richard, nu 70+ is een medisch specialist in ruste.
Deze thriller heeft vele verhaallijnen en thema’s op het gebied van misdaad en wraak, vormen van zorg en geloofsbeleving. In 79 korte hoofdstukken worden allerlei personen met hun dilemma’s en emoties opgevoerd. Het engste betreft het jongetje dat op zijn 12e in bittere kou voor het eerst met zijn vader mee op jacht mag. Om de 5, 6 hoofdstukken volgt een update over hem, of toch niet?
Dit is een ‘police procedural’, familieroman en ‘love story’ over 4 mensen die vroeg een partner verloren en anderen die nooit de partner kregen die ze wensten. Het is primair een verslag over de jacht op een seriemoordenaar, maar ook een warm, heel Engels drama over omgaan met de naderende dood van een partner, opbloeiende nieuwe en sluimerende oude liefdes op wat latere leeftijd, problemen met opgroeiende kinderen. Rijk en spannend boek ondanks diverse losse eindjes en 15+ doden door vier verschillende oorzaken. Begin erin en beleef het mee naar het slot.
