  • Book two of the Conclave of Shadows Trilogy.

Talon’s education is complete and he is now ready to start the next stage of his mission: destroy Duke Kaspar of Olasko.

This second part of the Conclave of Shadows trilogy describes Talon’s attempt to infiltrate in Duke Kaspar’s household to seek the opportunity for exacting his vengeance for the destruction of his family and home. In the Duke’s service and to earn his trust Talon likewise has to perform heinous acts. This is a premise that offers a great opportunity to examine the ethical predicament of doing wrong as a reckoning for another wrong done upon you. Unfortunately this question is hardly addressed here at all, which is a missed opportunity that could have elevated the story to a higher level. However, this not being the case is not at all an issue if one takes the book for what it is; not an articulate study of a moral dilemma with a deeper meaning, but rather a short, uncomplicated and amusing fantasy story penned in Feist’s usual plain and simple writing style. The narrative basically unfolds just as one would expect and there are no real surprises or clever plot twists. Indeed this may not be a novel that will in any likelihood make an enduring impression, but it is nonetheless a charming book that is very entertaining as long one’s expectations are not disproportionately high. Certainly ‘King of Foxes’ is a perfect novel to get through that rainy weekend. In addition it provides closure to the story of Talon’s revenge and after this book one can therefore safely reevaluate to either quit the trilogy or to continue with the third part ‘Exile’s Return’.
