Soepel geschreven pleidooi voor de terugkeer van schoonheid in de hoge cultuur. Volgens Scruton is die verdwenen uit de beeldende kunst sinds het urinoir, de readymade van Marcel Duchamp in 1917. Schoonheid is een fundamentele waarde die van belang is in onze dagelijkse omgeving om ons thuis te voelen, aldus Scruton. Hij maakt via filosofische redeneringen over smaak ofwel esthetiek duidelijk dat schoonheid in de kunst eveneens onontbeerlijk is. We hebben die nodig om onszelf te kunnen verplaatsen in het transcendentale om boven ons dagelijks bestaan uit te kunnen stijgen.
Door de voorbeelden die Scruton geeft van goede en slechte 'hoge' kunst wordt duidelijk dat hij een groot deel van de moderne en de hedendaagse kunst onder de maat vindt, omdat die de schoonheid 'ontheiligt'. In feite laat hij in 'Beauty' zien dat hij voorstander is van de traditionele filosofische onderbouwing van kunst (Vasari 1550), waarbij het gaat om het representeren van de werkelijkheid met geïdealiseerde schoonheid.
