Samenvatting

Ignat Kaneff arrived in Canada in 1951 with a mere five dollars to his name, no English, and very little education. Within five years, he had started a construction company and broken ground on his first subdivision, kicking off a career as one of the country’s top businessmen. His is one of Canada’s great immigrant success stories.

“Finally,” my father continued, “I have one last piece of advice.”

I listened to my father more attentively than ever before.

He leaned into me, his forehead now touching mine. “This is the most important thing I can possibly tell you.” He paused and wiped his eyes before continuing. “Always listen to Bai Kolyo [my father’s dear old friend]. I won’t be there to offer you guidance, but Bai Kolyo will never steer you wrong. Listen to him.”

I nodded my agreement before my father pulled me in for one last hug. As far as he knew, this might be the last time we would embrace, the last time he could show love and affection to his son.

“Always listen to Bai Kolyo,” he repeated softly into my ear, releasing me from his hug. I picked up my baggage from the platform and raced onto the train. It was time to go.

I found my seat on the train, overcome with excitement, emotion, and nerves. I glanced out the window to see my father standing on the platform, waiting for me to pull away.

The train began to move, and my father grew smaller in the distance until he was only a speck and then not visible at all. I remembered his words and swore to myself that I would do everything possible to follow them.

At last I was on my way. As I stared out the window, gazing at the Bulgarian countryside, I let out a long, self-satisfied breath. I was on my way to Germany. I was on my way to becoming a somebody.
