Samenvatting

Someone is killing young girls in the once-peaceful parks of Stockholm -- killing them after having his way. The people of Stockholm are tense and fearful. Police Superintendent Martin Beck has two witnesses: a cold-blooded mugger who won't say much and a three-year-old boy who can't say much. The dedicated work of the police force seems to be leading nowhere, and with each passing day, the likelihood of another murder grows. But then Beck remembers someone -- or something -- he overheard.

A quietly relentless thriller, The Man on the Balcony juxtaposes the most inhuman of crimes with the humanity of the men who must solve it -- their perseverance, frustration, and horror -- resulting in a police procedural that is as moving and credible as it is enthralling.

No. Popular fear of a terrible crime (child killings, serial house burnings and murders, terrorism) repeating itself anytime soon and nearby, is a hallmark of a real thriller. This chilling book surely is a thriller, worth a top-3 ranking in this 10-volume crime series.
A girl of eight is found strangled, possibly raped in a park in Stockholm. Martin Beck (MB) reads about it on the train home from a fishing trip and takes charge. Three days later a 10-year old girl is sexually assaulted and strangled in another park. A big police effort is mounted in a city fearing the child killer will strike again. All physical evidence, previous offenders, incoming phone calls are carefully examined. Will there be more victims?
Enters newcomer Gunvald Larsson(GL), a former Marine and merchant sailor, a big man with blunt manners. And under stress because of a string of violent robberies in Stockholm parks. GL argues in his office with colleagues Kollberg, Melander and Beck, then interrupted by a phone call. He takes some notes but throws them away later as useless. MB forgot the meeting in GL's office, but ever since he has been worrying about a clue he missed... It would be a crime to give away more.
Well plotted, modest in size, well written. All 10 S&W books can be read separately. The series has hardly aged and has inspired Henning Mankell (Wallander) and Arne Dahl (Hjelm)to emulate S&W and write 10-book series too about a crime fighter and his team.
