Tithe A Modern Faerie Tale

I would actually give "tithe" 4 1/2 stars. It's truly is an edgy fantasy/supernatural thriller type story, and Black delivers her 'modern faerie tale' in clean-cut (albeit a little explicit) language. You truly see what she intends you to see, and she's damn good at it. It was intriguing to find myself shivering at certain points, reveling in the deliciousness of her language. One of my favorite aspects of the book was the way that she starts each chapter off with a carefully selected quote that fits perfectly with it's coresponding chapter. It's worth it to read them...really.
The only issue I have with this book is the explicitness of the language-hence the deduction of half a star. Black's characters have a nasty habit of swearing all the way through the book. Interestingly enough, all swearing ceases when the characters are involved in the faerie world. (Alright, I lie. Kaye uses some spicy language during a heated escape attempt...but that's it.) Now, this can be interpreted as a good thing-a literary tool. I, however, found myself looking forward to the characters involvment in the faery realm in order to escape the salty language...even if only for a moment.
"tithe" is deffinetly a worthwhile book. Some snooping around has shown me that Black IS writing a sequal, which this book deffinetly needs and deserves. It's ending is tantalizing, leaving us craving more. It is heavy and dark, though...so be warned. If you can get past that, you will adore this book.
