Axel Scheffler
Axel Scheffler (1957) werd geboren in Hamburg. Als kind vond hij het al heerlijk om te tekenen en te schilderen. Toen hij zijn middelbare school afrondde, wist hij zeker dat hij iets met kunst wilde doen. Hij schreef zich in bij een kunstschool om leraar te worden, maar hij werd afgewezen. Daarom begon hij aan de studie kunstgeschiedenis. Al snel ontdekte hij dat die studie veel te theoretisch voor hem was. Axel besloot een tussenjaar te nemen. Tijdens een vakantie ging hij op bezoek bij een vriend die aan een kunstschool in Engeland studeerde. Toen dacht hij: Dat is wat voor mij! Hij verhuisde en ging studeren aan de Bath Academy of Art. Tijdens die studie besloot hij om illustrator te worden. Na zijn afstuderen werkte Axel als illustrator voor reclames en begon hij zijn eerste kinderboeken te illustreren. Na een paar boeken werd hij door zijn uitgever aan de schrijfster Julia Donaldson gekoppeld. Dat werkte zo goed dat ze nu al heel veel boeken samen hebben gemaakt. Hun bekendste boek is De Gruffalo, dat verschillende prijzen won en in 59 talen is uitgebracht! De pareldief schreef en illustreerde hij zelf.
