Het bijna helemaal waargebeurde verhaal van Dav Pilkey: Dav Pilkey werd geboren op 4 maart 1966, en vanaf dat moment probeerde hij andere kinderen aan het lachen te maken. Op de kleuterschool was Dav al heel verantwoordelijk: als er iets misging, was híj daar meestal verantwoordelijk voor. Zijn juf op de basisschool stuurde hem zo vaak de klas uit, dat ze speciaal voor Dav een tafel op de gang zette zodat hij daar kon werken. Aan dat bureau verzon Dav Pilkey zijn eerste verhalen. Al zijn klasgenoten vonden die verhalen vol gekke tekeningen supergrappig, maar zijn juf dacht daar anders over. Ze waarschuwde: ‘Je kunt niet de rest van je leven gekke boeken maken!’ Gelukkig luisterde Dav nooit zo goed. Voor straf moest hij naar de middelbare school, waar andere leraren hem nog meer ontmoedigden. Ze vonden dat hij maar zo snel mogelijk moest ophouden met grappige verhalen verzinnen. Gelukkig dachten ze daar op de universiteit anders over. Een van Davs docenten raadde hem aan om kinderboeken te gaan schrijven. De schok van zo veel aanmoediging werd Dav bijna te veel. Gelukkig kwam hij er snel weer bovenop, en maakte hij zijn eerste kinderboek. Inmiddels heeft hij al veel kinderboeken op zijn naam staan, waaronder de graphic novel-serie over Kapitein Onderbroek.
