New York - Nieuw Amsterdam. The Dutch Origins of Manhattan. The history of Dutch Manhattan began with a voyage the English explorer Henry Hudson made on behalf of the Dutch East India Company, charged with finding a north-eastern sea passage to Asia. On 2 September 1609, however, he dropped anchor at the mouth of the river that now bears his name. The Dutch trading post on Manhattan became a settlement of momentous consequence: New Amsterdam eventually became New York City. Famous individuals who lived and worked there include Pieter Minuit, Adriaen van der Donck, Kiliaen van Rensselaer and Director-General Peter Stuyvesant.

In this illustrated account, historian Martine Gosselink sketches New York's Dutch years from 1609 to 1664. In her narrative, the city's inhabitants step off the pages, from the first Muslim, a kosher butcher, the first black landowner and the first prostitute. Photographs, maps and illustrations bring to life the New York of then and now. The National Archive preserves our society's collective memory, with over 6,000 archives from Dutch elected bodies, ministries, and national figures and institutions, plus millions of photographs and hundreds of thousands of maps, all adding up to some 110 kilometres of documents.
