De makers? Klimop, een octopus en de tijd. Als we erkennen dat ook dieren en planten de wereld ‘lezen’, interpreteren en (op artistieke wijze) transformeren, is de traditionele tegenstelling tussen cultuur en natuur dan nog langer houdbaar? Semâ Bekirovic herkent zich niet in het beeld van de kunstenaar als eenzaam genie. Liever verkleint ze haar eigen inbreng in haar werk en deelt ze haar auteurschap met meerkoeten, warmte of het licht. Reading by Osmosis vormt het voorlopige hoogtepunt van dit proces. Ze staat hier compleet aan de zijlijn van het maakproces en geeft niet-menselijke kunstenaars ruim baan om hun werk te tonen. Reading by Osmosis bevraagt of het maken van kunst niet even onbewust en plantachtig is als bijvoorbeeld osmose. In het in dit boek opgenomen essay ’On Art as Planetary Metabolism’ werkt filosoof Michael Marder zijn theorieën over de niet-menselijk kunstpraktijk verder uit. -- Reading by Osmosis. Nature Interprets Us shows works of art that were not made by human hands: an overgrown fence, an underwater video, a battered disco ball. The makers? Ivy, an octopus and time. If we acknowledge that animals and plants, too, can 'read', interpret and (artistically) transform the world around them, is the traditional opposition between culture and nature still tenable? Semâ Bekirovic does not identify with the image of the artist as lonely genius. Rather, she minimizes her own contribution to her work, and shares her authorship with coots, heat, or light. Reading by Osmosis is the provisional high point of this process. Here, she removes herself from the making process altogether, to provide non-human artists with an opportunity to showcase their work. Reading by Osmosis raises the question if making art is a process as unintentional and plant-like as, for example, osmosis. The book includes the essay 'On Art as Planetary Metabolism', in which philosopher Michael Marder expounds his theories about non-human art making.
