Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime) dateert alweer uit 1997 en Hayao Miyazaki heeft deze animatiefilm gemaakt voor zijn oscarwinnende Spirited Away. Op de ranglijst van IMDb staat Mononoke-hime op de 73e plaats van de 250 beste (animatie)films aller tijden, dit geeft al aan hoe geliefd deze film is bij het westerse publiek.

The Art of Princess Mononoke is een hardcover illustratieboek met 224 aan pagina's met illustraties over de animatiefilm. Het boek bevat op chronologische wijze een verzameling van concept sketches, concept art, achtergronden, cel art, CG image van de animatiefilm.

Bij elke illustratie wordt een korte toelichting gegeven. De illustraties zelf zijn van hoge kwaliteit en zeer mooi om te zien. Naast illustraties bevat het boek ook een aantal korte gedichten van Hayao Miyazaki en een hoofdstuk over CG en digital imaging. Ten slotte bevat het boek een aantal storyboards en een production diary.

Het boek is niet in Japanse format, dus gewoon lezen van links naar rechts en van voren naar achteren.

Princess Mononoke is persoonlijk mijn favoriete animatiefilm van Studio Ghibli. Ik raad deze illustratieboek aan in ieder geval voor de fans van de animatiefilm. Liefhebbers van andere illustratieboeken van Studio Ghibli zullen ook met deze uitgave niet teleurgesteld worden.
