Het boek verteld het verhaal van Stuey Ungar, zoon van een bookmaker in New York rond 1960. Als zoon van de iets wat louche bookmaker komt Stuey al op jonge leeftijd in contact met de maffia in New York en ontwikkeld hij al snel een behendigheid met cijfers en gokken. Al in zijn tienerjaren weet Stuey zijn plaats te veroveren in New York. Gesteund en protected door de maffia kan hij gokken en kaarten in achteraf zaaltjes en illegale kaarthuizen. Al snel ontwikkeld Stuey zich tot een weergaloze Gin-Rummy speler, de beste ter wereld, en is er al snel geen game meer te vinden voor hem. Hij is genoodzaakt zich te richten op een ander spel, poker. Voor poker moet Stuey verhuizen vanuit New York naar Las Vegas, het mekka van het edele poker spel. Al snel weet Stuey in de loop der jaren ook in dit spel eeuwige roem te veroveren...
