    Het is boeiend om meer te weten te komen van de geschiedenis van Italië in de 15e/16e eeuw door de manier waarop Sarah Dunant er over schrijft. Historische figuren worden van vlees en bloed, en maken "gewone-mensen-dingen" mee. Ze heeft een vlotte stijl met hier en daar humor, ze vergeet de vrouwen zeker niet en ze heeft zich grondig in de materie en de leefomstandigheden uit die tijd verdiept, zonder dat dat irritant wordt. Lekker weglezen dus!

    Voor de lezer die interesse heeft in de roerige tijden van de Renaissance, is dit boek een goede keuze. Sarah Dunant schrijft geschiedenis, met hier en daar een fantasie, echter passend bij de figuur. Ze rekent af met de verhalen over Lucrezia als zou zij een gifmengster zijn geweest en haar echtgenoten hebben vermoord. Het is een wrede tijd, de broer Cesare schuwt niet een moord uit te (laten) voeren.
    Verraad wordt gestraft, vriendschap is niet altijd een garantie. Tegelijkertijd is de belangstelling voor kunst, literatuur en muziek heel groot. De familie die hier geportretteerd wordt is de familie Borgia, met aan het hoofd de Paus, die alles over heeft voor zijn familie.
    Dit boek wekt je belangstelling voor alle families die in deze tijd een rol spelen, de Sforza's, Orsini, Visconti, d'Este, de Montefeltro......
    Met veel interesse deze studie gelezen.

    Normaal een grote fan van de boeken van Sarah Dunant, maar dit was een tegenvaller. Te weinig diepgang en te weinig ontwikkeling van de personages. Terwijl ik erg heb genoten van het eerste deel van deze Borgia reeks, was dit echt te snel afgehaspeld.
