Born in 1921, MASTER ALFRED HUANG is a professor of Taoist philosophy, former Dean of Students at Shanghai University, and a third-generation master of Wu-style Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, and Oriental meditation with more than 70 years of experience. He studied the I Ching--a forbidden book at the time--in secret with one of China's greatest I Ching masters, only to be branded an antirevolutionary by the Communist government and forced into manual labor in 1957 and imprisonment in 1966. During his 22 years of confinement, he found the strength to survive through meditation on the I Ching. Released in 1979, he emigrated to the United States. The founder of New Harmony, a nonprofit organization devoted to self-healing, and the author of The Numerology of the I Ching and Complete Tai-Chi, Master Huang lives on the island of Maui.

De auteur voorziet ons, voorzover te verwachten is, van een letterlijke vertaling van het bronmateriaal. Hij geeft zijn beweegredenen voor de keuzes die hij maakt, ook in relatie tot eerdere, populaire, vertalingen zoals die van Wilhelm. Het Engels is zakelijk en prozaïsch, maar lijkt de kern te raken. Het is bij uitstek materiaal voor een eigen verdiepende studie in het onderwerp.
Er wordt veel waarde gehecht aan de commentaren van Confucius en meer dan eens worden vertaalkeuzes verantwoord door een verwijzing naar diens tekst. Ik heb geen moeite met die momenten, want de auteur kwalificeert zijn keuzes uitvoerig en geeft de lezer de mogelijkheid daarin zelf afwegingen te maken. Verder neemt hij geen stelling in historiserende vraagstukken; over het bestaan van historische figuren zoals Wen en Zhou, of Confucius, worden geen problematiserende uitspraken gedaan. Ook het orakel zelf wordt onironisch behandeld.
Een aanrader voor een ieder die meer wil weten van de I Ching. Als je op zoek bent naar een boek dat als pure orakelhulp kan dienen, dan is deze uitvoering waarschijnlijk te uitvoerig.
