Elizabeth von Arnim was een zeer succesvolle auteur. Ze werd geboren als Mary Annette Beauchamp op 31 augustus 1866 in Kirribilli Point, Australië. Ze groeide op in een Britse koloniale middenklassefamilie en was de nicht van schrijver Katherine Mansfield. Ze woonde daarna in Londen, Berlijn, Polen en de Verenigde Staten. In 1890 trouwde ze met haar eerste man, graaf Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin, een Pruisische aristocraat, met wie ze vijf kinderen kreeg. In 1898 publiceerde zij haar debuut Elizabeths tuin, dat anoniem werd uitgegeven. Het boek is gebaseerd op haar eigen leven en haar eigen tuin bij het familiehuis Nassenheide in Pommeren. Het boek was een succes en meer romans volgden, waaronder Vera (1921) en haar meest bekende boek De betovering van april (1922), dat twee keer verfilmd werd.
