Jonathan Phillips, a senior lecturer in medieval history at Royal Holloway, University of London, is the author of a number of books on the crusades, including

Jonathan Philips bevestigt eens te meer zijn wetenschappelijke reputatie. Deze Saladin biografie moet zeker niet onderdoen voor de andere vrij recente Saladin biografieën (Eddé en Lyons and Jackson), maar overtreft hen zeker qua leesbaarheid. Bij momenten komt de meeslepende vertelstijl van dat andere monument, Runciman, terug opduiken.
