John is afkomstig uit Salford, het havenkwartier van Manchester, waar hij na zijn schooltijd in het
twaalf-ambachten-dertien-ongelukken-straatje terechtkomt. In de weekends leest hij dan
zelfgeschreven misdaadverhalen voor in jazzclubs. In de jaren '76 en '77 gaat hij optreden in
punkclubs in Manchester, o.a. met The Buzzcocks. Hij maakt een epeetje voor het plaatselijke
Rabid-label en tekent vervolgens een contract met Cbs, waarop in '79 vrij snel achter elkaar
Disguise In Love en Walking Back To Happiness verschijnen. Na een succesvolle tournee met Elvis
Costello en Richard Hell begint John medio '79 geheel onder eigen vlag te toeren. De
gedoodverfde 'support-act' is zichzelf ontgroeid. Op Snap Crackle & Bop, aanvankelijk
alleen in Engeland uitgebracht maar later ook in Nederland verschenen, zij het zonder het
tekstboek waarin de songs van Disguise In Love zijn uitgeschreven, wordt Cooper-Clarke wederom
begeleid door The Invisible Girls. Ou Est Le Maison De Fromage bevat opnamen uit de pre-CBS
periode: Cooper-Clarke leest proeven van zijn poëzie voor, het geheel is geproduceerd door
Martin Hannett. Me And My Big Mouth is een compilatie van singles en een enkel 'nieuw'
stuk.
