De context is intrigerend, een amateur pokeraar met een heel groot vermogen neemt het op tegen de wereldtop van het pokeren. Door de extreem hoge inzetten die hij wenst te spelen hoopt hij de pokerpro's uit hun element te halen en dus daarmee hun voordeel weg te halen. Zal het hem lukken?

Waar ik op hoopte, maar zeker niet verwachtte zou een poker variant zijn van Playing of the Rail http://www.bol.com/nl/p/playing-off-the-rail/1001004000659441/
Een uitmuntend geschreven boek over de zoektocht naar High Stakes poolen, voor zowel de gebeurtenissen tijdens het poolen als ernaast.

Maar dat is "The Professor, the Banker and the Suicide King" dus niet. Sterker nog voor een boek over één van de grootste pokersessies, wordt er wel heel weinig pokerhanden zelf beschreven. Minder dan een handvol en vaak betrof het een geluk/pech-hand met grote financiële gevolgen.
Voor pokerlessen/-wijsheden hoef je dit boek ook niet te lezen.

Nee, het boek is een mengelmoes van beschrijving van wat pokerpro's die men kan kennen van High Stakes Poker seizoen 1 zoals Ted Forrest, Jennifer Harman, Tod- & Doyle Brunson en meer. Leuk om die wat beter te leren kennen. En wat ontstaansgeschiedenis hoe de pokerscene evolueerde in Las Vegas.

Althans dat is de opvulling voor de beschrijving hoe de Poker Pro's aan de ene kant stonden tegenover Andy Beal, de Texaanse Bankier, die op vele vlakken door onconventionele keuzes, maar wel heel vastberaden keer op keer heeft laten zien dat als men maar iets genoeg focus geeft je een meester in iets kan worden. Volgend project? Poker.

Soms is het boek iets teveel geschiedschrijving, soms iets te landradig/-durig naar mijn smaak. Of ik had graag meer de ambiance/state of mind/en andere beslommeringen voor de match zelf gelezen. Ik heb me prima vermaakt.
