Marion Meade

Marion Meade is the author of Dorothy Parker: What Fresh Hell Is This? and Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin: Writers Running Wild in the Twenties. She has also written biographies of Woody Allen, Buster Keaton, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Victoria Woodhull, and Madame Blavatsky, as well as two novels about medieval France.

Eleanor's long life inspired a number of legends. At twenty-five she set out for the Holy Land as a Crusader, and at seventy-eight she crossed the Pyrenees to Spain to fetch the granddaughter whose marriage would be, she hoped, a pledge of peace between England and France. This is a compassionate biography of this charismatic queen and the world she ruled over.

    Geschreven bij Eleanor of Aquitaine

    Meade is a good writer and has done her research but page after page is filled with conjecture about what Eleanor thought and what she felt at each event in her life. There is simply no evidence to support this. Also infuriating is the poor use of source material. Many things are related that we do not know where a lot of information was derived and by whom.

    This richness of imagination, however, brings alive one of the most fascinating people and periods in Medieval history. There is some skill in handling the history and power in the telling. Without the needless conjecture this would have been a first class book. I've yet to read it, but from the reviews Alice Weir's biography is more accurate, more thorough and is apparently well told also. Meade's effort is more like an entertaining hour on the History channel. It's carelessness detracting from some it's very strong good points.
