These sources illuminate different aspects of women's lives in the Viking age, on the farms and in the trading centres of Scandinavia, abroad on Viking expeditions, and as settlers in places such as Iceland andthe British Isles. Women in the Viking Age explores anunfamiliar aspect of medieval history and offers a new perspective on Viking society, very different from the traditional picture of a violent and male-dominated world. Women in the Viking Age, is the first book that has been published on women in that period. The Vikings were, before a major cultural change for the period took place in the 1970's, often and only described as a masculine world full of raiding barbarians. Jesch is the first who took up the complex task of finding women in the various sources on the Vikings and bind them together in a comprehensive book.
The book is a great stepping stone into the subject of women in the Viking Age and suitable for scholars and students alike. Jesch has a great, smooth way of writing and her research is excellently done. I can assure the readers a great book where the reader gets not only a glimpse of women but also an overview for the various complex sources the Vikings left us and how to combine them to get the grand picture.
