Britse singer/songwriter die in de jaren '60 uiterst succesvol was met The Beatles. John Lennon scoort in 1969 een nummer 1-hit met 'Give Peace A Chance'. Andere klassiekers van zijn hand zijn o.a. 'Instant Karma', 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)', 'Woman' en 'Imagine'. John Lennon wordt op 8 december 1980 in New York doodgeschoten.
John is onlosmakelijk verbonden aan de legendarische Liverpoolse band The Beatles. Maar ook zonder zijn Fab Friends weet John zich in de kijker te spelen. Samen met zijn vrouw, de Japanse kunstenares Yoko Ono, met wie hij in 1969 trouwt, begint hij een muzikale solocarrière. Nog tijdens de samenwerking met The Beatles brengt hij in 1968 het album Unfinished Music, No 1: Two Virgins uit. Het daarop volgende jaar volgen er nog twee vergelijkbare albums. In februari 1970 brengt hij de single Instant Karma uit, wat een grote hit wordt. John is nog steeds lid van The Beatles en wil de band trouw blijven, maar in april van dat jaar maakt Paul McCartney bekend de band te verlaten. Dit tot groot ongenoegen van John. Explores dark tourism; that is, the representation of inhuman acts, and how these are interpreted for visitors, at a number of places throughout the world, for example the sites of concentration camps in both Western and Eastern Europe.
This book sets out to explore �dark tourism�; that is, the representation of inhuman acts, and how these are interpreted for visitors at a number of places throughout the world, for example the sites of concentration camps in both Western and Eastern Europe. Many people wish to experience the reality behind the media images, or are prompted to find out more by a personal association with places or events. The phenomenon raises ethical issues over the status and nature of objects, the extent of their interpretation, the appropriate political and managerial response and the nature of the experience as perceived by the visitor, their residents and local residents. Events, sites, types of visit and �host� reactions are considered in order to construct the parameters of the concept of �dark tourism�. Many acts of inhumanity are celebrated as heritage sites in Britain (for example, the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle), and the Berlin Wall has become a significant attraction despite claiming many victims.
