This book is an instant classic. Saba is growing up in the isolated and dusty South Dakota foothills with her brother, sister and her crazy father. Mysterious strangers ride in on a dust storm and abduct her twin brother. What's a young girl supposed to do? Saba sets out on an epic journey through the Black hills to get her brother back... no matter what it takes.

Moira Young writes this novel in the first person and much of the dialog is written in southern colloquial language so the book feels almost like reading a diary. The prose may not be the most descriptive but the action is nonstop and the style really connects you to the main character. With a strong female central character making epic sacrifices to protect her family, there will certainly be those who compare this series to the Hunger Games Series but this book is much darker from the very beginning. It is very fitting that Katniss from the Hunger Games is the Mocking jay while Saba has her crow. Others may compare this book to Holes, True Grit or even Mad Max. Those kinds of comparisons are a pretty good indicator how good this book is and how exciting this series is promising to be.

Blood Red Road onderscheidt zich vooral van andere dystopische / post-apocalyptische verhalen door haar bijzondere schrijfstijl. Je moet er even aan wennen, maar daarna leest het verhaal verrassend vlot. De verhaallijn is misschien niet super origineel, maar Moira Young weet levensechte, imperfecte, personages te schetsen die veel ontwikkeling doormaken en diverse relaties opbouwen. Duizend hartjes voor kraai Nero bovendien! Hoewel Blood Red Road aanvoelt als een behoorlijk afgerond verhaal, ga ik zeker verder lezen in de Dust Lands trilogie.
