Samenvatting

'Roth's writing looks uncompromisingly straightforward but is subtle and clever...A human story for our times' A.S. Byatt, New Statesman
Philip Roth's new novel is a candidly intimate yet universal story of loss, regret and stoicism. The fate of Roth's everyman is traced from his first shocking confrontation with death on the idyllic beaches of his childhood summers, to his old age, when he is rended by observing the deterioration of his contemporaries and his own physical woes.
A successful commercial artist with a New York ad agencyhe is the father of two sons from a first marriage who despise him and a daughter from a second marriage who adores him. He is the beloved brother of a good man whose physical well-being comes to arouse his bitter envy, and he is the lonely ex-husband of three very different women with whom he's made a mess of marriage. ln the end he is a man who has become what he does not want to be.
Everyman takes its title from an anonymous fifteenth-century allegorical play whose theme is the summoning of the living to death.
'The genius of this short, bleak, remarkable novel stems from the way that Roth turns his desolate assessment of death into something bracing: an angry acceptance that mortality is the price we pay for the sheer wonder of this thing called life' Douglas kennedy, The Times
This elegant little book shimmers with the mysteries and regrets of a whole life..poignant, droll, and eloquent' Lionel Shriver, Daily Telegraph

  • Deep novel on everyman's fate

This short novel strengthened Philip Roth reputation as one of the best living writers. Seemingly without effort, he raises the drama of one person’s life to a universal level, using them bare to confirm everyman’s certainty: we will all die.
This book begins again once it has ended: because it starts with the burial of, and the grave-side speeches for a retired NY art director who has passed away at the age of 71. His elder brother Howie’s speech is marvelous, his daughter Nancy’s warm, his two sons just attend.
Roth describes key moments and choices in the deceased’s life, his health and sickness in this award-winning book. As Howie recalls, he loved his parents and brother and soon learnt responsibility. But as Roth points out, he faced death early in hospital, when the boy in the next bed died overnight. Earlier, he saw the corpse of a sailor torpedoed by the Germans on his cherished holiday beach. hese images surface time and again during his many hospital stays in later life, when his heart and veins require frequent surgical care.
His retirement in a condo on the Jersey coast begins well. Daily swims in the magical Atlantic ocean of his childhood, painting without commercial fetters, teaching it to other pensioners. But he soon realizes that ‘old age isn’t a battle, old age is a massacre’, when former colleagues and participants in his painting class start falling down like leaves in autumn. Lots of remorse too about his three failed marriages and his children.
Full of details about chronic heart problems and treatments, this could be a discussion book for reading clubs. The account of his final, perilous car trip to his parents’ grave and his conversation with the wise, old digger of their grave (and his, days later) is a wonderful ending to an emphatic and warm novel about everyman’s key life events.

Dit boek gaat over de realiteit van ouder worden en oud(er) zijn. Het is een eerlijk boek, maar ook met veel ontroerende momenten. Ik heb het met veel (h)erkenning gelezen.
