With the February Revolution of 1917, a concentrated immigration of Jews to the Soviet capital Moscow began. Gabriele Freitag concentrates in her study on the twenties and early thirties. She is interested in the different forms of settlement of Jews in the big city, their professional and social establishment as well as their political positioning in the Soviet metropolis. On the basis of a wide range of sources, including numerous archive documents that only became accessible after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Author the adaptation of a religious and ethnic minority under the conditions of social upheaval. Gabriele Freitag thus makes a well-founded contribution to the discussion about the position of Jews in the early Soviet Union. With urban socialization, the author also takes up a topic that, in contrast to studies of the urban Jewish milieu in Western Europe and overseas, has so far hardly been considered by historical research for the Soviet context.
