JLC’s last bestseller “Our Kind of Traitor” (OKT) had a mixed reception in the UK, but was a hit in the US. And tens of thousands of German, French and readers elsewhere must have read the book in English or in translation.
Like OKT, this passionate novel is an assault on Britain’s political establishment during the New Labour era under Tony Blair, then Gordon Brown. It suggests that some key persons within government pushed for strategic matters of national defence to be outsourced to private security companies based in the US. The “evidence” is presented in the lengthy (46 pp.) first chapter of this book, describing a secret US/UK operation in Gibraltar allegedly mounted to capture one of the most wanted persons on earth. This chapter also shows JLC’s awesome writing skills, which he will keep up until the end.

What follows is the tale of its aftermath. It is about one, then two Foreign Office staff involved in the operation. Later, the naïve one was made ambassador in the Caribbean. The other, more probing one was packed off to Beirut. Years pass by before the two meet and compare notes. Then the drama begins…
And the powers of surveillance by foreign and domestic security services, disclosed recently by former insiders, become apparent in this grand novel. It rivals Naomi Klein’s “The Shock Doctrine” published in 2007, a year before the ongoing crisis erupted, as the scariest book I have read in a decade.

John le Carré schrijft als een jonge god, geen teken van slijtage en met een uitstekend gevoel voor de tijdgeest. Als lezer wordt je het diepe in gegooid, pas later blijkt dat er veel zorg besteed is aan de fundering van een ijzersterk verhaal.
Er bestaan in de beleving van JLC geen white lies en of onschuldige brokkenmakers (lees te ambitieuze politici). De mantel der (vaderlands)liefde zou geen inbreuken op de waardigheid van andere innocent bystanders mogen bedekken, veiligheid is geen handelsgoed.
Wederom weet de schrijver geloofwaardige mensen neer te zetten, de verhaallijn is beangstigend realistisch.
De waarheid is een groot goed, daar mag in de visie van de schrijver en zijn helden niets voor wijken.
Het deels open einde waarmee het boek wordt afgesloten is een mengeling van goed en kwaad, de boodschap wordt verteld, de prijs lijkt hoog te zijn. Het klopt in het verhaal en het is niet goed anders te doen, maar toch blijft er twijfel hangen. Het boek heeft alles in zich om een klassieker te worden, Le Carré stelt nimmer teleur.
