Hisham Matar (1970) werd geboren in New York, waar zijn vader diplomaat voor Libië was. Hij groeide op in Tripoli, Caïro en Parijs, en woont sinds 1986 in Londen. Niemandsland, zijn debuutroman, werd in 2006 genomineerd voor de Man Booker prijs. Anatomie van een verdwijning is zijn tweede boek. Matar staat bekend om zijn prikkelende opiniestukken en als activist tegen de totalitaire regimes die het Midden-Oosten en zijn thuisland Libië kenmerken.
