Michael Cook beschrijft de relatie tussen oude religies en de moderne tijd. De behandelde religies zijn de islam, christendom en hindoeïsme. Iedere religie krijgt een toespitsing en wordt uitgediept. Het boek is in drievoud opgezet. De religies en moderniteit worden behandeld op het snijvlak van identiteit, waarden en fundamentalisme. Cook geeft heldere voorbeelden en diept deze zeer genuanceerd doch beknopt uit. Het Engels in het boek is nog relatief eenvoudig, en dat is knap want het niveau is desondanks hoog. Wat wel gezegd moet worden is dat dit boek geen boek is voor geïnteresseerde leken met weinig voorkennis. Diepgaande kennis van termen, begrippen geschiedenis en personen is noodzakelijk want Cook verondersteld die als bekend. Desalniettemin, een aanrader.
