Ik heb verschillende boeken van Goldsworthy's over Rome gelezen en vond dat deze net zo prachtig was geschreven als de andere. Net als bij "Decline" het gebrek aan bewijs op het moment maakt het moeilijk te interpreteren, maar het leuk om niet-geromantiseerde houdend met deze twee historische figuren te lezen. De ontmaskering van het Cleopatra-was-een-Egyptische mythe was interessant en niet iets dat ik zelfs had nagedacht.

De heer Goldsworthy geeft een evenwichtig beeld van zowel Cleopatra en Antonius, met terzijdestelling van de 'romantische' over zien deze Macedonische koningin van Egypte lijkt te wekken.

Al met al een fatsoenlijk boek, goed geschreven en een page-turner zeker. Als deze man mensen niet geïnteresseerd kan krijgen in de klassieke Romeinse (en nu Egyptische) geschiedenis, kan niemand dat!
