Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) ontleende zijn eerste faam aan de roman Main Street. Kort na publicatie van Babbitt echter ontving hij als eerste Amerikaan de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur. Naast romans schreef Lewis een grote hoeveelheid korte verhalen en toneelstukken. Lewis ontving de Nobelprijs voor 'his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humour, new types of characters', een omschrijving van zijn werk die zeer specifiek opgaat voor Babbitt.
