Paul Smith werkt al meer dan 25 jaar in de natuurbescherming en is vanaf 2016 secretaris-generaal bij Botanical Gardens Conservation International. Hij schreef in 2021 mee aan het rapport State of the World's Trees voor het IUCN World Conservation Congress. Voorheen was hij hoofd van Kew Garden's Millennium Seed Bank in Londen, waar hij toezicht hield op de conservering van zaden van meer dan 25.000 plantensoorten.

In the early 17th century, his family moved from Balkh to India, to live under the Mughul dynasty. He was born and educated near Patna. In his later life he spent time travelling and visiting ancestral lands. His writings in Persian are extensive, being one of the creators of the ‘Indian style’. Bedil’s 16 books of poetry contain nearly 147,000 couplets. With Ghalib he is considered a master of the complicated ‘Indian Style’ of the ghazal. He had complicated views on the nature of God, heavily influenced by the Sufis. The rhyme-structure has been kept and the meaning of these beautiful, mystical poems.
