Jose Saramago

"José de Sousa Saramago, GColSE (Portuguese: [ʒuˈzɛ ðɨ ˈsozɐ sɐɾɐˈmaɣu]; 16 November 1922 – 18 June 2010), was a Portuguese writer and recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. His works, some of which can be seen as allegories, commonly present subversive perspectives on historic events, emphasizing the theopoetic human factor. In 2003 Harold Bloom described Saramago as ""the most gifted novelist alive in the world today"" and in 2010 said he considers Saramago to be ""a permanent part of the Western canon"", while James Wood praises ""the distinctive tone to his fiction because he narrates his novels as if he were someone both wise and ignorant.""

  • Provoking book

    Positieve punten

    • Goede verhaallijn
    • Meeslepend verhaal

Since i read the book in both english and french i have to say there is a difference in how it feels.
Same story, same words but differently. The french edition had a bigger impact on me, it felt more natural then the english translataion, don't know why.
But it is one of my all time favorites and i would recommend this book to everyone.
Imagine there is an unexplained mass epidemic of blindness afflicting nearly everyone in an unnamed city. How will everyone react to it? Society, the relations between both the blind people and those who seems unaffected...
Somehow it reminded me of the stanford prison experiment of Zimbardo...meaning the interaction soldiers guarding the "internees".
I have to say the way the government and society react seemed believable..the struggle of the fittest between the internees seemed well like "the human race under extreme concitions" would do...but still not everybody is bad.The doctor and his wife are a good example of the fact that there is still hope...
