Een beetje een teleurstelling, dit boek. Nietalléén omdat de schilder een onaangenaam mens blijkt te zijn geweest, maar vooral omdat de schrijver hem geen diepgang geeft. De schrijver lijkt niet uit zijn adoratie te kunnen komen enafstand tot zijn onderwerp tekunnen nemen. Hij waagt zich niet aan gepsychologiseer, wat goed is, maar wat overblijft is een chronologische opsomming van de gebeurtenissen uit zijn leven, niet gekoppeld aan zijn schilderkunst, ontwikkeling noch interpretatie ervan. Voor mij was dit boek een " must have" en dat is het nog steeds, uit bewondering voor een fascinerende schilder wiens charisma toch een raadsel is gebleven.
