Samenvatting
An enormously respected author writing on a perennially popular subject. A Fascinating journey through time to visit Britain's battlefields, recreating their bloody atmosphere.
''When it comes to military history... Richard Holmes is in a league of his own''. So wrote London's The Daily Telegraph, and here we have that renowned military historian writing on a perennially popular subject. Britain at War takes the reader on a fascinating journey through time to visit Britain's battlefields, recreating their bloody atmosphere--a journey to twelve battlefields throughout Britain, Northern France and Belgium that mark crucial moments in Britain's bloody and turbulent history. With his expert knowledge of weapons and warfare and using specially commissioned maps, Richard Holmes provides a brilliantly clear picture of the events that led up to each battle, the conflicts themselves, and the people who fought them. Holmes uses practical ''views of the field'', traveling the battlefields as they exist today, pointing out their places of interest, paying tribute to the men who fought there, and bringing history to life.
