In response to George of Trebizond’s Comparatio Philosophorum Platonis et Aristotelis, which was a violent attack on Plato and Cardinal Bessarionʼs teacher, George Gemistus Pletho, Bessarion completed a rebuttal in Greek by 1459 and a Latin translation for publication of the same, the Liber Defensionum contra Obiectiones in Platonem, by 1466. But he then withdrew the Liber Defensionum from circulation. Nonethess, the Liber Defensionum remained the foundation of the famous In Calumniatorem Platonis of 1469 and is the text in which Bessarion made almost all his decisions on how to Latinize his original Greek work.
