Mathew Hervey heeft het helemaal gehad met het engelse leger en hoe het functioneert. Na de dood van zijn vrouw, veroorzaakt door zijn rancuneuze en incompetente commandant, gaat hij op reis naar Rome. Uiteindelijk accepteert hij weer een positie bij zijn regiment de 6th Light Dragoons, waar hij zijn eigen groep helemaal zelf moet recruiteren en trainen. Ze worden veel te snel uitgezonden naar India waar ze de nodige avonturen beleven. Mijn advies : Koop de hele serie in een keer als je van Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe houdt. Het engels van de schrijver is wel bloemrijk en soms ingewikkeld omdat hij ook veel vaktaal uit de cavalerie gebruikt.
