First of all, Banks is a good writer. He manages to bring this entire universe to life in detail and with stunning vision. Regardless of the oddities or horrors he describes, the storyline stays comprehensive for the reader.
Unfortunately, the storyline is not the main ingredient. It merely serves to introduce this whole array of environments and cultural quirks, leading to a funnyfair of characters not entirely serving the story. The entire Vavatch-sequence could have been omitted easily and there are more chapters like this. It's just too much.
The story revolves around Horza, a member of the Changer-species, who is on the payroll of a race of religious fanatics in various degrees. He can get along with the moderate ones among them, but he is not extremely motivated considering their ideology and he is very much aware of the existence of zealots of this race. In fact, the only reason he chose their side, is because it is opposed to the one of the Culture, which he believes to be an abomination to the natural course of things, mainly evolution. He is sent to a forbidden planet in order to obtain a conscious supercomputer (a Mind) from the Culture who has crashed there. On his ride there, he sort of gets stuck with a crew of outlaws.
I simply loved the line of thought from the perspective of the Idirans and the idea of a creature like Horza. You fully understand his choices, perspectives, his doubts and (lack of) conviction, and this is exactly why the ending fits the story so well.

Dit is een boek dat goed is in wat het probeert te zijn. Hele grote delen lezen weg als een regelrechte Hollywood blockbuster en daar moet je van houden (ik wat minder). De concepten en achtergronden worden op een natuurlijke manier geïntroduceerd maar voelen soms meer als een excuus voor het conflict dan de drijvende kracht van het narratief. Voor mij was dit een boek waarbij het begin en midden stukken sterker waren dan het einde. Het einde is een tactische uitputtingsslag die zich beter leent voor het witte doek dan voor het beschreven blad.
