Samenvatting

The electrifying sequel to Caves of Steel in which Elijah Baley is once more teemed up with R. Daneel. The two must travel to Solaria, where no human has gone in over a thousand years... Reacting in fear against the technological superiority of the Outer Worlds, the people of Earth have hidden themselves in vast underground cities, nursing a hatred for Spacers. The fifty Outer Worlds of the Spacers together are home to fewer people than planet Earth. And home to many, many more robots. Earthmen hate Spacer robots, too... But Baley doesn't. He once had a robot partner, R. Daneel - and when the authorities of the planet Solaria request terrestrial assistance in investigating a murder, Baley is once again teamed with Daneel. He is the first Earthman in a millennium to travel to the Outer Worlds...and he must endure the glare of a sun far more deadly than Earth's.

  • Asimov’s second Robot novel

Solaria is a world with only twenty thousand inhabitants, each living in his own vast mansion with servant robots taking care of their every desire. In other words, it is a world where there is no cause for jealousy or corruption and no reason for a crime department. Yet, it is on this world where a leading scientists is found murdered. Earth’s detective Elijah Baley is called in to help out.

‘The Naked Sun’ is Asimov’s second full length novel in his The Robot Series. Like its predecessor it is a crime story featuring detective Elijah Baley and Robot Daneel Olivaw. This time the scene of the crime is on the Outer planet Solaria, a world where robots outnumber humans over ten thousand to one. It is almost the complete opposite to Earth in every respect. Through the eyes of Baley we slowly discover more about the nature of the Solarian society and the customs of its inhabitants. Soon enough it becomes clear that this is not simply a case of homicide alone and that stakes might in fact be much greater. More prominently than in ‘Caves of Steel’ this novel investigates the sociological implications of the state of humanity and similarly Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics play an increasingly integral part in the plot. The role of this episode in the context of Asimov’s future-history vision which in addition includes the (extended) Foundation series and the Galactic Empire series slowly starts to become noticeable. Even if it could well be that the ending will not be completely surprising due to Asimov’s undisguised storytelling this novel has a lot of interest to offer, such as a decisively twisted Solarian society to inspire awe or bewilderment about how Baley has to solve a crime in such a setting. In the end the personal change of Baley’s character as a result of his Solarian experience becomes manifest. Recommended.
