Samenvatting
Two years after the death of Laura Darvey's ex-husband, Dan, in a Woodhill fire, Chicago gangster Bobby Darvey is out to avenge his cousin's death, which he blames on Laura and on Jake McCann. Ignoring the advice of other racketeers and his own right-hand man, Benjy Talbot, Bobby devises several schemes to accomplish his aim. He plans to destroy all of Laura's beloved horses and so discredit Jake that the village council will have no other choice than to discharge Jake as Fire Chief. To find out when is the best time to burn Laura's barn with all the horses inside, Bobby hires Nina Hernandez and her daughter, Ramona, to be housekeepers for his Aunt Alma, who lives in Woodhill. He will use Ramona's love of horses to get the information he needs, making her an unwitting accomplice.
Bobby gets sidetracked, though, and decides on another plan to harm Laura, which results in the mysterious arrival of numerous starving horses, on separate closely-spaced intervals, that Bobby hopes will pass on infectious diseases to all of Laura's horses, killing them. Instead, the horses bring the residents of Woodhill together to help bring the horses back to health. When that plan doesn't work, and Bobby learns that Benjy has been working with the Woodhill police and fire chiefs to thwart Bobby's plans, Bobby comes to Woodhill to kill Benjy and Jake himself. Bobby has killed before; he will not hesitate to harm or kill anyone who gets in his way.
