Samenvatting
With a body of work spanning four decades, Georges Didi-Huberman is considered one of the most innovative and influential critical thinkers writing in France today. Didi-Huberman and the image is the first extensive English-language study of his research on images.
Placing Didi-Huberman in relation to major historical and philosophical frameworks, the book shows not only how he modifies dominant traditions, but also how the study of images is central to a new way of thinking about art history. It explores the origins of Didi-Huberman’s project, arguing that he has sought renewal by turning the discipline of art history on its axis, wresting it away from founding ‘fathers’ such as Giorgio Vasari and Erwin Panofsky and reorganising it along the poststructuralist lines of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze. An image is a form of representation, but what is the philosophical framework supporting it? The book considers the different ways in which Didi-Huberman has taken up this question over the course of his career.
With clear discussions of Didi-Huberman’s ideas and arguments, Didi-Huberman and the image will serve as an entry point for both students and scholars working in the fields of art history, visual culture and image studies, and French intellectual history.
Philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Huberman is one of the most innovative and influential critical thinkers writing today. This book is the first English-language study of his writing on images. An image is a form of representation, but what are the philosophical frameworks supporting it? The book considers how Didi-Huberman takes up this question repeatedly over the course of his career. Placing his project in relation to major historical and intellectual contexts, it shows not only how he modifies dominant disciplinary traditions, but also how the study of images is central to a new way of thinking about poststructuralist-inspired art history.
