The new millennium heralds a new era of Dutch design. If in the previous century Dutch design was conceptual, humorous, opinionated, critical, well thought-out and artistic, it has now become much more than that. Dutch designers are among the best in the world. In their own workshops they work out and produce their designs in small quantities. This enables them to adopt an independent critical stance, resulting in experimental products and prototypes. The book 21st century Dutch Design: Hands on! provides an historical analysis and a current description of this Dutch Design.
Joost van Bleiswijk & Kiki van Eijk, Aldo Bakker, Maarten Baas, Joep van Lieshout, Christien Meindertsma, Studio Makkink & Bey, Joris Laarman, and Daan Roosegaarde explain their designs, in this way providing a unique overview of all the much talked about products that were made in the Netherlands in the past ten years . Other themes related to 21st century design - such as the revaluation of craft production, new digital production methods and the flirtation with art – are addressed as well.
In addition, there is an extended interview with Renny Ramakers, director and founder of Droog Design, the design platform that is the foundation of the current success of Dutch Design.
